Project Highlight: Canal Park - Grand Rapids, MI

Some projects go beyond the pour, and Canal Park is one of them. For years, Grand Rapids has felt disconnected from the riverfront. This project is looking to change that.

Local initiatives are working to bring more opportunities for residents and visitors to engage with the Grand River. A master planned revitalization of Canal Park includes an events pavilion, a kayak launch, river outlooks, and other amenities to increase accessibility, boost tourism, and establish a community hub along the river. That’s where Kent Concrete comes in.

“We came into this project knowing it’s going to serve our community for years to come,” shares Division Manager Jordan Berens. “Playing a role in a project this impactful is a point of pride for our team.”

Working on the riverfront has its own challenges. Safety and housekeeping need to be on point to keep people and equipment safe from the water. “This is where the crew’s relationship to the safety team is especially important. That collaboration is critical to executing a job like this without disruptions,” adds Berens.  Railings, floating docks, and life jackets were essential for pours close to the river edge.

In partnership with Owen-Ames-Kimball, our scope includes 50,962 SF of paving, 7,360 SF of sidewalk, 2,360 SF of paver base, as well as seat walls, curb and gutter, stairs, and retaining walls. When complete, the new Canal Park will change how all experience the heart of Grand Rapids, the Grand River.

For results that last, Kent delivers every time.
