Paying it Forward: Mentorship in Kent Concrete’s Austin Team

“My mentors helped shape who I am today and how I lead. I am proud to pay that forward with the interns I mentor now,” shares Kent Concrete Project Manager Raul Ramirez.

What does it mean to be a Kent mentor? For our crew in Austin, it’s all about creating spaces for students to grow and making them part of the team. Take it from our returning TXST CIM student interns.

“The atmosphere here is very welcoming and helpful. I never feel like I’m judged based on the questions I ask,” said Estimating Intern John Price. “Everyone in my division makes time for me and my learning.”

TSXT alum and Kent Project Manager Raul Ramirez, has taken interns under his wing and worked intentionally to create the kind of culture where students can thrive. He doesn’t just assign interns to busy work; he gives them real projects that have a meaningful impact. Project Engineer Intern Christopher Rodriguez talks about this saying, “I had the opportunity to see the entire foundation process, from the first drilled pier through completion. They treated me as more than just an intern and made me feel like an important part of the team from day one.”

But mentorship at Kent extends beyond the work. Both interns are back for a second year and when asked why they chose to return, the answer was the same for each: Kent’s culture.

“I chose to return because of the culture throughout the entire company, both in the office and in the field. The respect and trust the team has for me makes me feel valued, and it’s a place where I know I can continue to grow and learn,” said Rodriguez.

Price backs this up adding, “I fell in love with the culture here. I played golf with project managers on the weekends, and they even invited me to come down during the school year to celebrate Thanksgiving together. My division manager wishing me a Merry Christmas means a lot.”

Mentorship matters. Period. From providing real-world experience to including students in the Kent culture, our mentors are making a difference in the lives and careers of young professionals all over the country.
